Pressure washers are essential tools for contract cleaners across Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. But they’re also one of the most commonly damaged pieces of equipment we see.
Most issues come down to improper use or mismatched equipment. Here are the three most common problems and how to stop them before they cost you time and money.
1. Using the Wrong Type of Pressure Washer
It’s tempting to grab a small domestic pressure washer for light commercial work but they’re not built to operate for hours. Domestic units have small plastic pumps that overheat and wear quickly under heavy loads. Anything over 15-20 minutes!
When these machines are pushed too hard, the pump can seize, seals fail, and you end up with an expensive repair or full replacement.
Tip:
For daily cleaning or extended jobs, always choose a commercial grade pressure washer with a brass or stainless-steel pump and proper cooling. The upfront cost is higher, but they’re designed for long-term use and lower maintenance costs.
2. Using the Wrong Extension Lead on Electric Machines
A long, thin household extension lead might look fine, but it can starve your machine of power. The thinner the cable, the more voltage drop you get over distance. This forces the motor to work harder, overheating the windings and drastically shortening its life.
Tip:
Use a heavy duty 10 or 15 amp lead, no longer than 10 metres. Check the current draw on your pressure washer’s data plate or ask your supplier to make sure your lead is rated correctly.
If you need more length, extend the high pressure hose.
3. Not Releasing Pressure from the Hose
When the job’s done, many operators switch off the machine and pack it up without releasing the pressure in the hose. That trapped pressure keeps the seals under load, causing leaks and early failure.
Tip:
After turning off the machine, squeeze the trigger to release pressure It’s a small step that can double the lifespan of your seals and fittings
Preventing Pressure Washer Damage
Most pressure washer breakdowns can be avoided with the right setup and a bit of care. Use the correct machine for your workload, pair it with the right power supply, and take a minute to release residual pressure after each job.
If your pressure washer is leaking, losing power, or running hot, it’s worth getting it looked at before the damage spreads.
