A car park sweeper is a powered machine that picks up grit, sand, leaves and litter from sealed outdoor or undercover surfaces and holds it in a hopper. For most Brisbane car parks you hire a ride-on sweeper once the area passes about 3,000 square metres and a walk-behind below that. Ramps, height clearance and whether the mess is dry or wet matter as much as the size.
The search results for this mostly show truck-mounted street sweepers. They’re a different service, and plenty of car parks don’t need one.

Do you need a hire sweeper or a sweeping truck?
A hire sweeper is a machine your own staff drive or push. A sweeping truck comes with a driver and is booked by the visit. If you’re clearing a public road, or doing a large open-air lot every week, the truck contractor is usually the better fit.
The hire machine wins when you want to sweep on your own schedule. Common jobs are an undercover car park cleaned before opening, a loading yard cleared after a storm, or a site handover where the date keeps moving. You keep the machine for the week and use it whenever the job needs doing.
The walk-behind and ride-on sweepers on our floor sweeper hire page are the kind you run yourself. Truck-mounted road sweepers are a separate category of equipment.
Walk-behind or ride-on: which suits a car park?
Area is the first cut. Our walk-behind hire sweepers suit areas up to about 3,000 square metres and tighter spaces. Ride-ons suit 3,000 square metres and above, which covers most shopping centre car parks, distribution centre yards and logistics hardstands.
| Car park | Usual hire | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small undercover lot, office or medical centre | Walk-behind | Fits between bays and pillars, quiet enough for business hours |
| Multi-level car park with ramps | Self-propelled walk-behind or ride-on | A machine you push will not climb a ramp loaded with grit |
| Open lot or yard over 3,000 m² | Ride-on | Covers a full sweep cycle in one shift |
| Yard that also needs washing | Sweeper-scrubber combination, or sweep then scrub | One pass where the site suits it |
Area alone doesn’t settle it. When Shaun Herman, who runs CC Machines, walks a site he looks first at access, doorways, how much room there is to turn, and the obstacles. Then he checks how often the area needs doing. In a car park that means pillars, wheel stops, speed humps and the turning circle at the end of each aisle.
Ramps, clearance and fumes: the car park checks
Car parks catch people out in ways a warehouse doesn’t, and ramps are the big one. “If the site has ramps it needs a self propelled unit,” is how Shaun puts it. A push sweeper on a ramp is hard work going up and hard to hold coming down, so if your car park has levels, say so when you book.
Then measure height. Find the lowest beam, sprinkler pipe or sign on the route, and the clearance at the entry. A ride-on with an overhead guard is taller than people expect.
Last, think about exhaust. Ride-on sweepers come in battery and fuel-powered versions, so ask which one you’re getting. In a basement or a fully enclosed level, battery is the safer choice for the people working there.

What the sweeper picks up, and what it won’t
A sweeper handles loose material: sand, grit, dust, leaves, litter, packaging. It won’t lift an oil stain, tyre marks or a film of grime. That’s scrubber work, done with water and a brush.
Most car parks have both problems, in that order. Sweep the loose debris first, then scrub the stained bays and walkways. Running a scrubber over grit packs its recovery hose and wears the squeegee in a day. That is why sweeping comes first. If you need both, the floor scrubber hire range covers the wash. Our post on which hire machine cleans a concrete floor goes through sealed and bare slabs.
Tell us whether the debris is dry or wet when you call. A layer of wet leaves after a storm is a different job from dry grit, and we’ll check the machine suits it before it leaves Brendale.

Brisbane storms and the October to March clean-up
Brisbane’s storm season runs roughly October to March. It drops sand, grit and organic debris across car parks, yards and loading docks, often overnight. A one-off clear after a big storm is one of the most common reasons people hire a sweeper.
Wet debris left in place blocks drains and leaves a slippery film on painted line marking and ramps. Clearing it the next morning, before vehicles grind it into the surface, is easier than cleaning up after a week of traffic.
We deliver from Brendale across Brisbane’s industrial areas. That includes Eagle Farm, the Australia Trade Coast, Rocklea and Acacia Ridge, plus the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Ipswich and Logan. Same-day delivery is possible on in-stock machines.
How car park sweeper hire works with us
The terms depend on whether we deliver. Collect the sweeper from Brendale and return it there, and you can hire it by the day. If we deliver, the minimum is one week and delivery is charged on top of the hire, though collection at the end is free. Longer agreements run from monthly hire up to sixty months, with servicing built into the agreed rate.
Every hire includes setup on site, operator training, breakdown cover for the hire period and scheduled servicing. To quote, we need the debris type, the area, the narrowest access point, any ramps or height limits, whether the mess is wet or dry, and when the job has to be finished. Call 1300 343 246 or send those details through the floor sweeper hire page.
Look after the filter on a dusty site
A sweeper on a dusty car park loads its filter quickly. The filter is easy to damage. The last ride-on sweeper Shaun fixed himself was a Tennant S30 with a HEPA filter, only five months old. The site had been blowing the filter out with compressed air and had torn the element. These filters aren’t built to be blown out, and a replacement costs around $1,000.
His advice to that site, and to anyone on a hire: leave the HEPA filter alone and watch the replacement light on the dash. If it comes on between services, call us and we’ll come out and replace it.
Is your own sweeper out of action?
Breakdown cover is a common reason to hire a sweeper. Before you replace the broken one, get it inspected.
One facilities management company had two quotes to replace a sweeper that had been taken out of service. When we looked at it, the machine had done about 90 hours. The main fault was a throttle neutral switch, plus some minor parts. It went back into service for roughly $4,000, against a replacement of around $80,000.
We repair petrol, LPG, diesel and battery sweepers, and can hire you a machine while yours is in the workshop.

Common questions
Can you hire a sweeper for a car park in Brisbane?
Yes. We hire walk-behind and ride-on sweepers for car parks, yards and loading areas across Brisbane and SE Queensland. Collect from Brendale for daily hire, or have it delivered on a hire of one week or more.
What size sweeper do I need for a car park?
A walk-behind suits up to about 3,000 square metres and tight undercover lots. Above that, a ride-on is the usual choice. Ramps call for a self-propelled machine whatever the size.
Will a sweeper remove oil stains from a car park?
No. A sweeper picks up loose debris. Oil, tyre marks and grime need a floor scrubber after the area has been swept.
Is delivery included in sweeper hire?
Delivery is charged on top of the hire and is available on hires of one week or more. Collection at the end of the hire is free.
Can I use a petrol sweeper in an undercover car park?
Ask before you book. In a basement or enclosed level a battery sweeper avoids exhaust fumes where people are working.
