Childcare floors have a problem no other commercial site has. The people using them are on the floor, hands down, faces close, all day.
That changes what “clean” means and it changes what equipment is appropriate. Loud is a problem. Chemical residue is a problem. A wet floor during nap transition is a serious problem.
Why the Floor Matters More Here
In an office the floor is a surface people walk on. In a childcare centre it is furniture, a play area and a dining table.
Most centres run a mix of surfaces in the same building: vinyl in the activity rooms, carpet or soft mats in the reading corners, tiles in the bathrooms, and something hard-wearing outdoors. Each one wants a different tool, which is why a single mop and bucket ends up doing all of it badly.
The Daily Routine
The practical constraint is that you clean around children or in a very short window after close.
- Vacuum before you wet anything. Sand and grit tracked in from the playground is what actually wears vinyl and shortens the life of a floor. Pull it out dry first.
- Use a machine that dries behind itself. A compact scrubber-dryer like the Nilfisk SC250 or the i-mop Lite leaves the floor walkable straight away rather than roped off.
- Do soft surfaces on their own cycle. Mats and carpet corners hold more than they look like they do.
Noise Is a Specification, Not a Preference
This is the thing centres tell us after they have already bought the wrong machine.
If any part of your cleaning happens while children are in the building, and in most centres it does, the sound level of the machine decides whether it gets used at all. We have collected machines from centres that were still in near-new condition because staff would not run them during the day.

Cleaning Without Leaving Something Behind
Every chemical you use on a childcare floor is a chemical a toddler will have their hands in within hours.
This is where steam earns its place. It sanitises with heat rather than more product, which suits bathrooms, change tables, high chairs, cot frames and the grouted areas that mops skate over. The Duplex Jetvac units steam and vacuum in one pass, so you are not leaving the surface damp.
Steam does not replace whatever your centre’s health and hygiene policy requires. It reduces how much chemical you need to hit the same result, which is usually the direction you want to be moving.
Deep Cleaning the Soft Surfaces
Carpet corners, reading mats and soft play take a beating and they are the surfaces most likely to be neglected because a vacuum makes them look fine.
A carpet extractor flushes and pulls back out what a vacuum leaves behind. Run it on a schedule during a closure period rather than reactively when something has visibly gone wrong. Drying time is the reason to plan it, not skip it.
Building the Schedule
Split the work by how often it needs doing rather than by room, and the roster gets much easier to hold.
- Daily: dry vacuum all floors, scrub hard floors, wipe touch points and bathrooms.
- Weekly: steam bathrooms, change areas and high-touch fixtures.
- Term break or closure: extract carpet and soft surfaces, deep clean outdoors, service the machines.
Put the machine servicing on the same closure schedule. Six or twelve month intervals depending on how hard the machine works, and doing it during a break means you are never short a machine on an open day.
