What Does Floor Scrubber Hire Cost in Brisbane?

Floor scrubber hire in Brisbane costs about $80 to $120 a day for a compact walk-behind, $120 to $180 for a mid-size walk-behind, and $200 to $400 a day for a ride-on. Hire it for a week or a month and the daily rate drops, often by a third or more. That is the short answer. What follows is what moves the number, what a quote should cover before you compare it with another, and where hiring stops making sense.

What are the hire rates for each machine size?

The rate follows the machine size, and the machine size follows your floor. Here are our current Brisbane bands.

Two things stand out. A week costs about the same as four days, so a job running past Thursday is cheaper on the weekly rate. And a month is roughly the price of twelve single days, so anything you will run more than three days a week is already cheaper monthly. Monthly hires also carry scheduled maintenance, not just breakdown cover.

What is included in the rate, and what is not?

Every hire from us includes delivery and pickup across Brisbane and South East Queensland, setup on site, operator training and breakdown support for the length of the hire. If a machine fails through normal use, we repair it or swap it. Cleaning chemical is included on longer hires.

That matters when you compare quotes, because the market does not price this the same way. Hire counters and cleaning suppliers around Australia list walk-behinds from about $90 to $130 a day and ride-ons from $230 to $500, mostly counter pickup with a bond, no training and no one to call. A Brisbane general hire yard lists scrubbers from about $241 a day. None of that is wrong, it is a different product. A machine you collect and work out yourself is priced as a machine. A machine that arrives sized for your floor, with someone who shows your operator how to run it, is priced as a job.

So before you compare two numbers, ask what each one covers:

• Is delivery and pickup in the rate, or added by the kilometre?
• Is there a bond, and how much?
• Who trains the operator, and is that charged?
• What happens if it stops working on day two?
• Is the machine the right size for the floor, or the size they had on the shelf?

What costs are not in the day rate?

Three, and only one of them is usually written on the page.

Damage and misuse charges. Hire agreements exclude the jobs that wreck a scrubber, and the one that comes up again and again is concrete dust. Machines come back from building sites full of half-set slurry that has to be chipped out of the tank and hoses, and the cleaning charge follows. If your job is construction dust, a scrubber is the wrong machine anyway. A vacuum or a sweeper handles it, and costs less to hire.

The bond. Counter and hardware-store hires generally take a deposit on collection, and at the consumer end that is around $100 on a machine renting for about $44. Ask what it is before you compare day rates.

Your own time. A counter hire means collecting the machine, loading it, working out the controls yourself and getting it back by a deadline, with two forms of identification to collect it in the first place. That is what a pickup hire is, and it is an hour or two of someone’s day that never appears in the quote.

What makes the price go up?

Four things, in order of how often we see them.

Floor area. The biggest driver. A ride-on costs two to three times a compact walk-behind per day, but on 5,000 square metres it saves more in labour than it adds in hire. Under-hiring to save money is the most common mistake we see: a compact machine on a big floor means a full shift of refilling and a floor still damp at opening.

Hire length. Short hires cost more per day. If you are not sure how long the job will take, book the week. Extending a daily hire day by day is the most expensive way to hire a machine.

Floor condition. A floor that has been mopped for years carries a layer of built-up grime that a single pass will not lift. That job needs a heavier machine, a harder brush and more than one pass, which means more days. We can usually tell from a photo.

Whether the floor gets swept first. The advice operators repeat more than any other, and no hire page mentions it. A scrubber is not a vacuum. Run one over loose grit or builder’s debris and it drags the mess around, clogs the recovery hose and wears the squeegee in a day. Sweep first, or hire a sweeper for the debris and a scrubber for the film. Location. We deliver from stocked service vans rather than a central depot, so most of Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich and Moreton Bay is same-day or next-day at no extra charge. The Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba are regular runs.

Is it cheaper to hire a scrubber or pay a cleaning contractor?

For a one-off deep clean of a large floor, hiring is usually cheaper if you have a person to run it. A ride-on plus one operator will clear a 5,000 square metre warehouse in a day. A contractor quoting the same floor is pricing their machine, their labour, their travel and their margin, and they are often hiring the machine themselves.

Where the contractor wins is when you have nobody to put on the machine, or when the clean is small enough that the hire minimum is most of the bill. A 300 square metre shop floor is a contractor job or a compact walk-behind for a morning, not a ride-on.

When does hiring stop making sense?

The rough rule we give people: if the machine will run three or more days a week, every week, buy it. Anything seasonal, project-based or uncertain, hire first.

The break-even is simple. A compact walk-behind at $80 to $120 a day, three days a week, is roughly $12,000 a year in hire. A new machine in that class costs a fraction of that and lasts years with basic care, so buying wins inside the first year.

Flip it for a two-week post-construction clean. A ride-on for ten days is a few thousand dollars against a purchase well into five figures for a machine you would then store, charge and service for its whole life. Hire wins, and it is not close.

If you are somewhere in between, hire the machine you think you want for a month and count how often you actually reach for it. That is how most owners we deal with ended up choosing: they hired the same machine two or three times, learned what they wanted in a deck size and a run time, and bought that. How do you get an accurate hire quote?

Three things and we can price it on the phone: your floor area in square metres, the floor type, and the narrowest door or lift the machine has to pass through. A photo helps if the floor is heavily soiled. From that we match the machine size, which is what sets the rate. Over-hiring wastes money; under-hiring means the job takes all day.
