Choosing the Right Hire Machine by Facility Size

Under 1,000 sqm (cafe, clinic, small retail): Compact walk-behind. Quick to deploy, fits in tight spaces. Common hire for Brisbane CBD hospitality fit-outs.

Working Out Whether to Hire or Buy

The break-even is simpler than most people expect. Compare the daily hire rate against the purchase price divided by the days you would actually use the machine.

A compact walk-behind sits around $80 to $120 a day on hire. If you need it three days a week, every week, you are paying roughly $12,000 a year to rent something you could own. At that frequency, buying wins inside the first year.

Flip it around for a two-week post-construction job. A ride-on at $200 to $400 a day for ten days is a few thousand dollars against a purchase price that runs well into five figures for a machine you would then have to store, charge and service for the rest of its life.

The rough rule we give people: three or more days a week of ongoing use, buy. Anything seasonal, project-based or uncertain, hire first. If you are somewhere in between, hire the machine you think you want and count how often you actually reach for it.

What to Check Before the Machine Arrives

Most hire problems are site problems, not machine problems, and all of them are avoidable with a five minute walk-through.

Access. Measure the narrowest door, lift and gate the machine has to pass through. A ride-on that will not fit the goods lift is an expensive delivery to watch turn around.
Power. Battery machines need somewhere to charge overnight, on a normal outlet, near where the machine will live. Check the socket exists before delivery day.
Water. You need a tap to fill from and a drain to empty into. On big floors you will do this several times a shift, so the further apart they are, the slower the job.
Floor condition. Loose debris, pallets and cable runs have to be cleared first. A scrubber is not a sweeper, and running one over grit chews through pads and squeegees. On a concrete slab that matters even more, and which hire machine cleans a concrete floor covers the order to run them in.
Who is operating it. We include operator training with every hire, but somebody has to be available to receive it on the day.
